The biggest investment in TV Globo history, the “remake” of Benedito Ruy Barbosa’s soap opera “Pantanal,” may also be the largest dramaturgy revenue in the station’s history.

Market experts heard by the column since last week estimate that the total revenue of the soap opera could exceed R$600 million.

Except for the annual release of its balance sheet, Globo does not comment on its expenditures and revenues to the press or public, or disclose certain data.

As expected in this column in 2020, automaker Caoa has signed a millionaire contract with Globo to be the official sponsor of the house soap operas for a period of 3 years (albeit an undisclosed amount).

When contacting TV Globo regarding the issue, he sent the following note to the corner via the Contact Center.

“The main sponsor of the Pantanal telenovela is automaker Caoa. Other advertisers will also be able to participate in the telenovela’s plot through content actions.

Among them, in addition to Vivo, Casas Bahia, Itaipava, Unilever (with the brands Dove and Rexona) are already approved.

In addition to the aforementioned content actions, Globo also offers multi-platform market opportunities that include digital and social offerings, spaces for broadcast breaks throughout the soap opera, as well as custom projects tailored to customer needs.”

Record billing and expenses

In terms of revenue, the only Globo program that equals “Pantanal” (R$ 600 million) is “BBB”, as the website “Notícias da TV” explains.

The difference is that Globo shares this wealth with Endemol Shine, and the soap opera and Globo only have to pay royalties to the author – this is tiny compared to revenue.

But Globo doesn’t live on income alone. The telenovela is also the network’s largest expenditure ever in the dramaturgy division.

The market estimate (not verified by Globo) is that pre-production, relocation and maintenance of equipment costing millions of dollars as well as filming, retaining a large team of actors, producers and technicians could cost around R$180 million – for a total of 216 planned episodes.

Despite this, a “modest” R$480 million remains for the publisher and partners of the Marinho family. In other words, about 5% of annual revenue from TV alone.

Not bad. Not bad at all.
