Smoking equipment caused a large fire that destroyed a condo building Friday night through Saturday in Saskatoon’s Sutherland neighborhood.
According to an investigator, the fire started on the ground floor of the building.
When crews arrived at the scene around midnight Friday, the roof of the three -story building, located at the corner of 108th Street and Bryans Avenue, was completely on fire.
Several people were rescued by firefighters and no one was reported injured.
The fire was brought under control after nearly 5 hours and the building represents a total loss, according to firefighters.
The damage was estimated at $ 5 million. The site was handed over to the company that manages the condominiums to be safe.
Part of the structure was demolished by an excavation company to ensure all hot spots were killed and to prevent further collapse.
The tragedy caused the evacuation of several families.
The Salvation Army of Saskatchewan has reserved hotel rooms for 12 families displaced by the fire on Saturday.
