Multiple bomb attacks were recorded this morning in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kramatorsk. The municipality remains under the control of Kiev, despite the threat of a massive attack by Russian troops.
Attacks, possibly with long-range missiles or rockets, destroyed a school in the center of the city, next to the police station.
A crater with a diameter of 10 meters was seen in the school garden. Neighborhood residents said that because the school was empty, the attack did not cause any casualties. Local authorities have not released an official balance sheet so far.
Ever since Russia withdrew its troops from Kiev and the north-central regions of the country and announced that it would “intensify its efforts to liberate Donbass” in eastern Ukraine, the region has suffered from a major Russian offensive.
The Ukrainian government fears a worsening situation in the region. The country’s armed forces have been deployed since 2014 on a front line bordering Donetsk and Lugansk, the capitals of the two pro-Russian separatist “republics” of the same name, reaching Izium in the northwest, recently conquered by Ukraine.
Kramatorsk, the de facto regional capital of the region still under the control of Kiev in the east of the country since October 2014, is in the center of the region and will be almost surrounded by the Russians.
In recent days, thousands of people have left the city completely for fear of quarantine. According to a Ukrainian rail company, 3,100 people left Kramatorsk on Monday, but travel was interrupted by the bombing on Tuesday.
