At the referee’s signal, each opponent pulls as hard as possible to destabilize the other. The first to drop a piece of wood, remove their feet or hold on to the ground with their knees, loses the game.

Two women sit facing each other before a Nordic wrestling match. A referee stands between the two, ready to start the game.

It is a traditional sport of Yakut nomadic culture that originated in the Sakha Republic in Siberia and which only beginners know about the West.

Albertan Andrew Bolinger, an electrical engineer by profession, hopes to make popular this discipline he discovered in 2017.

I was invited to a championship in Russia because I was known to have a very muscular backexplanation by the vice president of the Canadian Nordic Wrestling Association.

I haven’t done it before. I lost, but I immediately fell into this sport. It is also a cultural experience because of all the exotic countries involved. There are people from Madagascar, South Korea, India or Poland.

On the international scene, Russians, Pakistanis, Hungarians and Americans are among the best in this suitable sport.

Strength and mind

Nordic wrestling works the whole body. Its followers train, primarily, by lifting weights and bars.

It’s about strengthconfirmed Manraj Sing Sekhon, who has been training for two years. It is more dynamic and fun to be in front of a person than alone lifting weights on a machine.

This construction worker admitted that some relatives found his new passion pipi and dangerous. The mind is very important. If you doubt, you loseadded Manraj Sing Sekhon.

Women are still rare in this discipline. A 26-year-old psychology student at the University of Calgary, Courtney Hollihan is one of the exceptions. He trains every Saturday.

You have to be strategic and train a lot to win. Over time, we develop reflexes that are important because the fight only lasts a few seconds.he says.

Maple syrup for advice

Courtney Hollihan participated in a competition in Finland in December where she met industry stars, fierce and very strong woman.

I brought maple syrup to give to them in exchange for techniques, for example, to win by holding the stick in a certain way.he recalled.

According to Andrew Bolinger, who has participated in five competitions abroad and twelve in the country, Canada has only about fifty practitioners, mainly in Alberta. We want to develop this sport in the east to organize events there.

The big world meeting, which no one wants to miss, will be held in Russia in June, but Canadian athletes may cancel their trip because of the war in Ukraine. The next competition in Canada is in Edmonton on the 28th of August.
