He added that the campground, minutes from Chéticamp, has a name that well reflects the place.

This is the first campground we have with a name in French and in Mi’kmaw, so we were very excited to be there!

The name was chosen among the communities to honor the indigenous ties to the area and pay tribute to the Acadian people who were abducted when the national park was created in 1936.

Cap-Rouge/Mkwesaqtuk campground is also one of the first campgrounds to be fully powered by solar energy. Then, unlike most parks, campers have to walk to their pitch closer to the shore.

That’s really niceassures Véronique Hotton. You are on the edge of the water and most of the sites are surrounded by trees, so it gives a feeling of isolation without being far from nature.

The Parks Canada agent added that there are also sites accessible by car for campers living with disabilities, and there are several oTENTik sites for people without equipment or who want to simplify their lives.

From May 12, interested campers can make reservations on the Parks Canada Reservation Service website for stays beginning July 1, 2022.
