Bitfarms, claims its site on rue de la Pointe has lost from energy consumption of 30 to 18 megawatts.
In a press release published Tuesday, the company specializing in cryptocurrency drilling claimed to have complied with the agreement signed with the City of Sherbrooke last fall.
For nearly three years, neighbors at the site have specifically complained about the noise emitted by the plant’s powerful fans located near the Magog River.
After trying several times to correct the situation, Bitfarms decided to move to new facilities in the industrial park. However, the move was not immediately planned.
In total, 2500 machines were disconnected. This is a large amount of energy that is not consumed. It has a direct influence on noiseargument of Bitfarms spokesman Stéphane Bertrand.
The closure of these machines, however, had economic implications for the company, Mr. Bertrand recalled. However, we are in the process of transition. We have two factories that are not fully functional, but this makes it possible to mitigate losses on rue de la Pointe.
According to the spokesperson, Bitfarms will set up three new locations: on Léger, Garlock and Joseph-Louis-Mathieu streets in the Sherbrooke industrial park. This will allow us to close the rue de la Pointe site. The development of new sites is underway. Some are already earning some income. When we arrived in Sherbrooke, we signed a 96 megawatt contract with Hydro-Sherbrooke. So far, we are using 30 megawatts. There is no more nuisance for the people and we will reach our full power.
According to the company, a Bitfarms move follow-up committee meeting took place on May 11th. Thanks to the collaboration of Ville de Sherbrooke and Hydro-Sherbrooke, the work to advance the transition to the new sites is progressing smoothly.
Bitfarms must move no later than February 2023.
