Unifor president’s salary: police open investigation

Canada’s largest private sector union said it handed over to police the money its former president Jerry Dias allegedly received as part of a kickback scheme.

Unifor said the payment to Toronto police was decided on the advice of its legal counsel following a complaint filed against Jerry Dias.

In addition, the Toronto Police Service confirmed Tuesday afternoon that it has opened an investigation.

Unifor allegedly last month that its former president received $ 50,000 from a supplier of the COVID-19 rapid test he was promoting to union-member employers.

Some of these companies would have bought these tests. The union noted that Mr. Dias was accused of violating the code of ethics and democratic practices defended in union laws.

On Tuesday, Laura Brabant of Toronto police confirmed that a criminal investigation has been opened. The investigation is at an early stage and we will not comment on the details at this time, so as not to jeopardize the investigation.he said in an email to The Canadian Press.

Mr. Dias has been the face of Unifor for a long time. Before giving his resignation, he led the union since 2013.
