Many topics put a punctuation mark in the news of Aboriginal people with specific funding announcements. $ 1.3 billion was awarded to Siksika First Nation in Alberta on June 2 in land claims. Ottawa also announced an agreement in principle described as “historic” between the federal government and the First Nations on June 3 to fund the Aboriginal education system in Quebec.
And finally, First Nations University of Canada hosted its Spring Pow Wow on June 4th.
Rose Nantel discusses these topics with First Nations University of Canada student and President of the First Nations University of Canada Student Association, Krysta Alexson.
He was originally from the Kahkewistahaw Cree First Nation.
He was pleased with the money given to the Siksika Nation for reconciliation and to the First Nations communities of Quebec to improve their education as well as to give them more autonomy in their education system.
He added that the reconciliation should be replaced by repair, as the damage cannot be restored, but it can be identified.
He explained that the natives were sympathetic to their own culture which had been taken away from them.
