British Columbia’s Occupational Health and Safety Agency fined BC Ferries $ 674,445 after the drowning death of one of its employees in June 2020.
The penalty was imposed by WorkSafe BC last month, according to a statement on the agency’s website.
The employee died while performing maintenance work on a ferry docked in Richmond, Metro Vancouver.
According to WorkSafe BC, the worker leaned on a protective webbing net in an attempt to fish for a floating object, but the net broke and the employee, who was not wearing a flotation vest, fell into the water and drowned.
The company has failed in its duty to ensure the health and safety of all workers in the workplacesays the agency’s website. The company also failed to provide necessary information, instructions, training and supervision to its employees to ensure their health and safety.
These are two high -risk violationsends at WorkSafe BC.
Reconsideration was requested by BC Ferries
In a statement, BC Ferries said it responded to WorkSafe BC’s inspection report delivered here in November 2021, and implemented repairs.
BC Ferries also indicates that it has requested a review of this inspection report at show that reasonable precautions, safety policies and procedures, and training are in place.
The Crown corporation reserves the right to appeal and is awaiting the Coroners Service report to complete [son] internal investigation.
