The cycling advocacy group wants to reduce bicycle theft in Winnipeg

A cyclist advocacy group collected 300 responses to its online survey to assess whether bike registration with the Winnipeg Bike Registry helps in the event of theft or loss.

One of Bike Winnipeg’s volunteers, Charles Feaver, explained that more than solving the crime problem, the goal is to get more people to cycle more often.

Bicycle theft really messes it uphe moaned.

Winnipeg police say 2,100 bikes were reported stolen in 2020.

Passionate cyclist Tim Webster is no exception. He stole four of his bicycles from his home.

Today, his bicycles are stored in the middle of his living room.

Because if they want to take it, they have to come and fight me to get it backhe said.

He urges cyclists to register their bike with the City, because if it is stolen, it will be easier for police to return the bike if it is found.

A flight of chance

Tim Webster poses with his bike in his living room.

It’s easy to steal a bike that isn’t locked properly and resell it, Charles Feaver says.

He was well placed to find out, as two bikes were stolen from him. All that was left was the chain he used to attach his bike to his radiator. [J’ai] learned a lesson. Even a good chain is not good enoughhe pointed out.

The cycling advocacy group Bike Winnipeg has repeatedly recommended the use of two locks, a cable and a U-lock, and always secures both the wheels and the frame to wherever the bike is hanging.

The group also advocates for the creation of long -term bicycle storage areas in the capital of Manitoba.

Over the next few weeks, Feaver will review the survey results. He hopes a plan will be made in combination with survey and other research.
