Train derailment near the Manitoba-Ontario border on Saturday

A Canadian Pacific (CP) train derailed near Caddy Lake in Whiteshell Provincial Park, Manitoba, resulting in a fire. According to the train company, the incident happened on Saturday, around 4 p.m., and no one was killed or injured.

A Manitoba government spokesman confirmed in an email that provincial fire prevention and control teams as well as local firefighters responded and extinguished the fire caused by the derailment.

The fire reached about 3 acres before being brought under control and no leaking material escaped from the overturned wagons, according to the spokesman. Teams are still on site for a clean-up operation.

However, the PC instructed that the train does not carry hazardous materials.

Former Whiteshell Cottagers Association president Kerry Davies said he contacted a witness before 5 p.m. The fire was extinguished, the water bombers reacted quicklyhe explains.

Davies said around 8 p.m., Manitoba Environment, Climate and Parks confirmed that the fire was under control.

The PC says the causes of the incident are still under investigation.
