In December 2021, Judge David Gerecke ordered the immediate suspension of the general manager of the Lighthouse in Saskatoon, Don Windels, for controversial financial reasons. The decision was made public on Monday after the publication ban that was in effect was lifted.
This non-profit organization helps vulnerable people by providing them with housing.
Court documents reveal that Don Windels applied for a loan from the organization in 2017 to buy a house for his daughter.
However, this house was purchased by the light house and was only in the possession of Don Windels.
This purchase was not registered as a loan with the organization and the light house paid the insurance costs and the house bills.
According to Judge David Gerecke, Don Windels bought the house back for $60,000 in 2020 and reimbursed some expenses. However, the value of the house had increased to $230,000.
An investigation by a court-appointed inspector indicates that between 2017 and 2020, Don Windels made several renovations to this property.
Court documents also indicate that between 2009 and 2021, the light house paid $417,000 to Don Windels’ family members.
Judge David Gerecke asked the Lighthouse to review its bylaws to prevent a chief executive from holding the position for ten consecutive years. No employee should be eligible to become a general manager, according to Me Gerecke.
The judge also ordered that Don Windels hold no office in the light house until December 2023.
” Mr. Windels was not honest in exercising the power of his office and did not take into consideration the interests of the organization. “
Not an exception
The former president of light housePierre Trudel, also obtained a loan of $30,000 from the light house in 2010 for his company Mech-El Servicesaccording to Judge David Gerecke.
The latter held this position within the organization between 2010 and 2017.
Although this loan has not yet been repaid, David Gerecke indicates that Pierre Trudel recently signed a repayment contract.
