Just 2 and a half kilometers separate Fuerte Apache from the José Amalfitani stadium. On foot, it takes half an hour. When he was Carlos Alberto Martínez, he accompanied his friend Danilo Sánchez, the Uruguayan, several times, who played in Vélez’s inferiors. Like Carlos Tevez, he first played there on July 28, 2002, against Chicago. Almost two decades later, he returns to another role.
Of course, this match will not look like Carlos Tevez’s official debut as a manager. Apache plans to meet Chapa Carlos Retegui (his future assistant) at the Vélez stadium to see the team train officially starting Tuesday 21 June. It will be his first experience as a manager.
At this moment, the former DT of Las Leonas and current Undersecretary of Sports of the City of Buenos Aires defines his future: it is that, from the government of Horacio Larreta they have told him that they will not give him a license to try his luck in his new Adventure will therefore have to resign if he intends to be Carlitos’ companion on his debut as technical director.
Tevez’s presence in Liniers has a curious fact: of the six games played at the José Amalfitani stadium, only four were against Vélez: he won 2, drawing 1, losing 1 and scoring two goals. The other two were against New Chicago, with a win and a draw.
El Apache arrived just before the game and sat in one of the boxes that Vélez’s management gave them to be able to watch the game with confidence.
