In Toronto, the individual who is accused of having set fire to the clothes worn by a woman in the subway on Friday appeared Monday afternoon in court in the west of the metropolis.
Police say Tenzin Norbu poured a liquid substance on the woman before setting her on fire at the Kipling subway station in west Toronto. Police believe the crime may be motivated by hate.
The 33-year-old man, who is originally from Toronto, is charged with attempted murder and assault with a weapon.
The individual, who is still without a lawyer, will have to return to court on Tuesday morning. He applied for legal aid. He had already appeared for the first time on Saturday.
Tenzin Norbu, with cropped black hair and a chin-length goatee, appeared via video link in an orange prisoner’s outfit from his prison. His forearms were covered in tattoos.
He has been held at the Toronto South Detention Center since his arrest.
The Crown has already indicated that it intends to ask that he remain in detention until his trial.
