René Kègle’s trial is set for October 3

The trial of René Kègle for the planned murder of Jean-Christophe Gilbert will begin on October 3, four years after the death of the 24-year-old man.

A duration of 6 to 7 weeks is planned for this trial. We already know that her attorney Me Annie-Sophie Bédard intends to file a defense to non-criminal liability for mental disorder.

Jean-Christophe Gilbert, from Massueville, was killed on Oct. 2, 2018. His dismembered and burnt body was found in a burnt vehicle a few days later, on Oct. 10, along with Steve Lamy, in Bradley Road, in Three Rivers.

The vehicle was discovered on the same day of the murder of Ophelie Martin-Cyr, the 19-year-old girl allegedly shot by René Kègle on a farm in Yamachiche.

Jean-Christophe Gilbert will be the first victim of a murderer run by René Kègle.

The question of the other two murders will be dealt with after this first trial.

File by Francis Martel

The file of Francis Martel, also accused in connection with the deadly escape of René Kègle in the fall of 2018, returned to the superior court this morning.

Discussions are ongoing between prosecutors to reach an agreement. The man was charged with the murder of Ophelie Martin-Cyr and conspiracy after the fact.

Lawyers said they hope to file a joint motion by the end of April. There will only be a few strings to tie.

So far, the case of the man in his thirties has been postponed, under the terms of assizes, until September 9, 2022. It will move forward once prosecutors reach an agreement.
