Minister Mélanie Joly on Tuesday will discuss her American counterpart

The war in Ukraine will be at the heart of virtual discussions on Tuesday between Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly and her American counterpart.

Si Ms. Joly and U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken will discuss the ongoing multilateral effort to repel Russian President Vladimir Putin’s attack on Ukraine.

The virtual meeting was announced on Monday shortly after Mr. Blinken and U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin met in person in kyiv with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Mr. Blinken said on Monday that international support for Ukraine – from more than 30 countries, including Canada – provides concrete resultswhile the same cannot be said about Mr. Putin’s initiatives.

The US Secretary of State said Russia had failed in its attempts to remove its sovereignty from Ukraine.

Later this week, Canadian Defense Minister Anita Anand was in Washington for a series of face -to -face meetings with Mr. Austin at the Pentagon.

This will be the first official visit of Ms. Anand in the US capital as Minister of National Defense. He will be joined by Chief of the Defense Staff, General Wayne Eyre, Deputy Minister Bill Matthews and the Chief of Communications Security Establishment, Shelly Bruce.

Ms. is expected to discuss. Anand and Mr. Austin’s support for Ukraine, as well as the modernization of the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD). The modernization of this bilateral defense system has gained a new importance today, since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

On Tuesday, Minister Anand, General Eyre and Deputy Minister Matthews are due to participate, in Germany, in meetings of the Ukraine Defense Advisory Group, organized by US Secretary Austin.

These meetings will be an important opportunity for partners and allies to discuss Ukraine’s current and future defense needs.said the Canadian Ministry of Defense in a statement on Monday.
