The Trudeau government is wondering about the possibility of partnering with the United States to actively defend itself against intercontinental ballistic missiles.
This was stated by Canadian Defense Minister Anita Anand at a conference organized on Tuesday in Ottawa by the Canadian Institute of Global Affairs.
He took the opportunity to provide some sort of update on Ottawa’s plans to modernize, along with the United States, North America’s aging military defenses.
According to the minister, the government is considering a full review ballistic missile defense as part of a broader review of what is needed to better protect the Americas from possible attacks.
Ottawa withdrew in 2005 from the American program of ground-based long-range ballistic missile interceptor systemmore commonly known as missile shieldafter a very stormy national debate.
The accuracy of this decision has since been regularly questioned, primarily due to North Korea’s improving ballistic capabilities.
The significant deterioration in relations with Russia since the start of the war in Ukraine has complicated the problem.
Canada’s defense minister promised to offer more details soon on how Ottawa and Washington can improve North America’s defenses, which many military officials consider obsolete.
