Quebec parents who want to embark on the adventure of international adoption are required, starting in 2023, to adhere to a preparatory program developed by the Ministry of Health and Social Services.

The program in question, is called International adoption: the first steps of my reflectionwas launched Monday morning in Montreal by the Minister for Health, Lionel Carmant.

This preparation will be done entirely online through a series of nine stages including, among other things, readings, videos and questionnaires, to allow prospective parents to follow the training at their own pace. independently.

The program aims not only to equip parents to deal with the maze of international adoption, but also to enable them to assess themselves about this process.

The nine stages specifically discuss the primary motivation to adopt a child, the children’s experience in the context of adoption, their socio-emotional development and the risk and protective factors. It also discusses the elements surrounding the child’s experience prior to adoption and his or her search for identity thereafter.

The other stages focus on the legal context of international adoption, the progress of such a project and the decision-making process surrounding it.

In summary, this preparation program aims to enable parents to identify their expectations, their abilities and their limitations, as well as the challenges they will face, and to inform them of the needs. and particularity of an adopted child.

This will be mandatory in early 2023 when the translation of the program into English is completed.
