Ottawa has assigned a contact person for the protection of cemeteries near former residential schools

The federal government on Wednesday appointed Kimberly Murray as Independent Special Interlocutor for Missing Children and Unmarked Residential School Burials.

As a special interlocutor, he will work with residential school survivors and communities to recommend a legal framework in Ottawa for courteous and culturally appropriate treatment of graves and unmarked funerals in the former place of the school residencewe learned in a press release.

Si Ms. Murray, who is from Kanesatake, Que., Will begin June 14. It is expected to produce an interim progress report in one year and a final report in two years.

The creation of this position was announced by Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations Marc Miller and Minister of Justice David Lametti in August 2021.

At the same time, $ 320 million over three years is intended to support the search for unmarked graves and the demolition and reconstruction of former residential school sites.
