The Federal Conservatives argue that Canada’s Minister of Public Safety Marco Mendicino has lost credibility and are calling on him to resign.
They accused him of making conflicting statements about his decision to use the Emergency Measures Act in February, when thousands of demonstrators blocked downtown Ottawa to protest against health measures.
Marco Mendicino has been under intense investigation since telling a special House of Commons committee that police have asked the government to use the Emergency Act.
Since then, the RCMP
and Ottawa police said they did not seek law enforcement, and the Deputy Minister of Public Safety told the same committee that Mr. Mendicino’s statements were not understood.Try to explain
Mr Mendicino tried to clarify his comments, saying the government had consulted the police on what powers they needed to end the blockades, and the Emergency Act was the only way to give them those powers.
He told the government will never apologize for doing the right thing to end the protests and called on the official opposition to apologize for supporting the convoy.
The special committee exploring the decision to use the law will meet again Tuesday night and hear from Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland and Minister of Emergency Preparedness Bill Blair.
