Indonesian football massacre: Police blamed six in the stampede that killed 131

Indonesian police on Thursday accused six people, including three policemen, of negligence and other charges in the stampede at a football stadium on Saturday that killed 131 people and injured more than 460.

This was announced by the head of the National Police, Listyo Sigit Prabowo, in a press conference in which he stated that among the accusations there are articles 359 and 360 of the criminal code on negligence resulting in death or serious injury.

Among the accused also the president of the Indonesian football championship, Ahmad Hadian Lukitaas well as managing director of the Arema club, Abdul Harisand the head of security at the Kanjuruhan stadium, Suko Sutrisno.

Prabowo stressed that they are investigating the use of tear gas that caused the stampede during the match between the Arema and the Persebaya Surabayathe visiting team, at the Kanjuruhan stadium in the city of Malang, on the island of Java.

After losing 2-3, the Arema fans took to the field, causing clashes with the police, who responded with batons and tear gas, causing a flight of thousands of people.

The victims of the stampede include two police officers. and 33 minors between 4 and 17 years old.

There were no fans of the rival team, as it was agreed that they should not participate to avoid clashes.

The police chief explained that many victims he died of suffocation and fractures when they tried to escape through some doors which were only 1.5 meters open, which caused a huge crowd of people.

Prabowo also indicated that there have been failures in stadium safety which hadn’t been fixed since 2020.

So far, authorities have suspended 10 police officers, including the Malang police chief, while investigating twenty other agents for his performance in Saturday events.
