Argentinian Facundo Tello has been called to referee Saturday’s match between Morocco and Portugal, for the quarter-finals of the Qatar 2022 World Cup.
Tello, 40, will be accompanied by his compatriots Ezequiel Brailovsky as first assistant and Gabriel Chade as second linesman. In addition, the fourth referee will be Salvadoran Iván Barton and the VAR 1 referee will be in charge of his compatriot David Morán.
Tello was already present in the match against Switzerland and Cameroon in the group stage and in the same event he refereed South Korea against Portugal. In both performances he earned a rating of 6.5 from FIFA, which allowed him to continue the race. As a result, he will lead his third World Cup match and equal his compatriot Fernando Rapallini’s record.
Rapallini had already directed Morocco 0-Croatia 0, for the first date of group F, and Switzerland 3-Serbia 2, last day of zone G, last Friday.
The history of Argentine refereeing at the World Cup has Néstor Pitana as a maximum referenceif it comes to appearances: he has directed 9 games, in two World Cups.
In Brazil 2014 he was in 4, reached the quarterfinals and Argentina’s continuity (played the final) in that tournament took away his chance to advance. Already in Russia 2018 the missionary added 5 more, with a figure that equals Horacio Elizondo: directing the opening and final match.
Elizondo, as a result, is next in stats, with 5 games officiated in Germany 2006. Also among the leaders is Cordoba’s Héctor Baldassi, with 4 games in South Africa 2010.
