Renowned American sportscaster Grant Wahl48 years old, died while covering the match between the Argentina and Holland teamfor the quarterfinals of Qatar World Cup 2022. His brother spread a message on his social networks and he reported that it was a homicide.
As reported by New York PostGrant collapsed at Lusail Stadium and was taken to a nearby hospital, but they didn’t confirm whether he died in transit or at the medical center.
His brother shared a video on his Instagram account that it was a homicide: “My name is Eric Wahl. I live in Seattle, Washington. I am Grant Wahl’s brother. My brother was healthy. He told me he had received death threats. I don’t think my brother just died, I think he was murdered. And I’m just asking for help.”
“I’m gay. I’m the reason he wore the rainbow jersey at the World Cup,” he concluded. The LGBT shirt he refers to is the same one that Grant wore to enter the stadium for the match between the United States and Wales, in the group stage, and which cost him a delay from the Qatari authorities.
“Security guard refuses to let me into USA-Wales stadium. You must change your shirt. Not allowed,” Grant tweeted on Nov. 21.
And he elaborated on his experience: “What happened when the Qatar World Cup security detained me for 25 minutes because I was wearing a shirt that supported LGBTQ rights, he forcibly took my phone and angrily asked me to take off my shirt to enter the stadium”.
His last Twitter post came at 18:05 (Argentina time) on Friday, when he wrote: “An incredible goal from a free-kick designed by the Netherlands.”
