The president of the Pumas of the National Autonomous University of Monterrey, Leopoldo Silva, announced this Friday that the Mexican club has decided to terminate the contract of the Brazilian footballer Dani Alves, who was jailed this Friday following a rape complaint.
The leader also explained in a press conference that the body made the decision because it was a “just cause”.
“With the information that has occurred today on the legal process that Dani Alves is facing and for which he is detained in Spain, we have decided to communicate the following: the Pumas club has taken the decision to terminate Dani Alves’ contract for just cause as he today. With this decision, the club reaffirms its commitment not to tolerate acts by any member of our institution that go against the spirit and values of Pumas,” Silva said.
Alves was detained this Friday in Brians 1 prison (Barcelona) for the alleged rape, on December 30, of a woman at the Sutton nightclub in that Catalan city.
The judge investigating the case has ordered the pre-trial detention without bail for the former Barcelona winger, who has also worked for Juventus in Italy, Sevilla, PSG and who has until now been registered with Pumas Mexico.
Alves denied having had sexual relations with the young complainant, a story that does not agree with the evidence (biological traces and traces) analyzed by the Mossos d’Esquadra, the Catalan police.
The declaration of the young woman, on the contrary, was coherent and solid, according to judicial sources, cited by the newspaper El País.
Allegedly, the footballer committed the attack on the night of December 30th. The 23-year-old victim reported Alves Jan. 2 for “non-consensual touching.” With the new classification of the crime, the term sexual abuse for behaviors such as touching has been eliminated from the Spanish penal code and everything has been included in the term sexual assault.
After appearing this Friday at the Barcelona police station where he had been summoned, the player was arrested and went to court. The private prosecution exercised by the plaintiff was added to the request for precautionary custody by the Public Prosecutor.
Alves, 39, admitted to having been at the disco that day, but from the beginning he denied having attacked the woman who reported him: “When you choose to go to the bathroom you don’t have to ask who’s in the bathroom to be able to go in the bathroom,” she said.
He also stated, “I was there, in that place, with more people having a good time. Without invading other people’s space. I don’t know who that lady is.”
His partner, the model Joana Sanz, also took sides in his defense: “I know who my husband is. I know how much he respects me because he didn’t disrespect me even when he knew me”.
After the arrest of the player, Sanz, 29, sent a message on social media with the caption “together”.
The complainant, who was at a disco with some friends celebrating, told the police that the Brazilian footballer touched her under her underwear without her consent. As reported by El Periódico, the footballer locked her in a bathroom and raped and slapped her there.
The woman reported the incident to the security personnel of the disco, who activated the established protocol and warned the police. When the police arrived at the disco, the footballer had already left and a few hours later he flew to Mexico.
The victim was taken by the police to a health center for a medical examination.
Barcelona decided at the end of last season not to renew the contract of Alves – the team he was with in 2021-2022 and between 2008 and 2016-. The Brazilian then signed for the Mexican Pumas and played the World Cup in Qatar with the Brazilian team. After finishing the championship, he went to Barcelona to spend a few days, at which time the events for which he was accused took place.
