The new Conmebol rule that will change the way to play the group stage of Libertadores and South American teams

Conmebol has announced that, for the first time, prizes will be distributed to teams that manage to win their matches in the group stage. The provision will apply to both the Copa Libertadores and the Copa Sudamericana and will provide an important economic motivation as well as a large income for those clubs that manage to add three units.

“Per match won rewards will generate more competitive matches and more attractive tournaments”expressed its owner Alejandro Domínguez.

in the Libertadores, the sum will be $300,000 per win. In other words, if a team manages to win the 6 matches corresponding to the group stage, they could pocket up to $1,800,000. For his part, the South American will have $100,000 as an incentive to win.

With this reform, the parent company of South American football will distribute 301,000,000 dollars between its two competitions. That means a 21% increase over 2022 and, translated into cash, an increase of $57,000,000.

Beyond the enormous prestige of tournament participation, the financial aspect cannot be overlooked. For the Libertadores group stage, which kicks off in April, each club will receive $3m. While the Copa Sudamericana distributes 900,000 dollars for group participation.

The prizes of the Copa Libertadores

As the rounds progress, the prizes get bigger and more attractive. Those teams that make it to the round of 16 will add $1,250,000 to their coffers. Those who take it one step further and play in the quarterfinals will earn an additional $1,700,000. The top four teams in America will pocket $2,300,000. Finally, the champion will win $18,000,000 and the runner-up $7,000,000.
