Czech-born, American-nationalized tennis player Martina Navratilova, 9-time Wimbledon champion, announced today that the throat and breast cancer she was diagnosed with late last year is “in a phase of remission” after successful medical treatment.
“From what is known, one could say that I am cancer free”revealed the 66-year-old former great champion in an interview with the British outlet Talk TV and reported by the Spanish sports dailies Marca and AS.
Navratilova, a tennis legend with 18 Grand Slam titles which elevated her to number one in the world, and with a total collection of 167 titles on the WTA circuit, she underwent intensive treatment for a tumor she was diagnosed in 2010 but which recurred forcefully at the end of 2022.
“When the doctors told me, I was in total panic for three days thinking I might not see next Christmas.. I came up with a bucket list of all the things I would have liked to do if I had only one year to live,” Navratilova admitted.
The former tennis player underwent radiotherapy every day for a three-week period and three weekly rounds of chemotherapy.
“It’s definitely the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life”concluded Navratilova.
