Sometimes footballers lose their minds and attack the referees… but in this case the story was very different. This weekend there was a scandal in Mexican soccer when the referee Fernando Hernández The former Independiente kneeled in a “disguised” way in the groin area Luke Romero. The Argentinian protested angrily after a controversial move and in the middle of his snub he received a blow from the judge, caught on camera broadcasting the match.
After the turmoil that was generated by Hernández’s aggression, in the last few hours the sanction that the referee will receive has been communicated, with a total of 12 games away from the fields, according to the decision taken by the disciplinary body of the MX Championship.
“Fernando Hernández Gómez, the central referee of the match, is sanctioned by the disciplinary commission with a 12-game suspension for violent behavior towards a player,” the institution said in regards to the altercation that took place on 13 of the Mexican championship .
“To the fans and general public, my apologies, as well as Lucas Romero for my reaction yesterday; I would never attack him, nor would any other player. Aware of this, I will comply with the resolution that the Disciplinary Commission will take accordingly”, was the dismissal of the referee, given a few hours before the sanction was known.
The situation itself occurred in the 64th minute of the match, when León and former Vélez player Lucas Romero reprimanded the referee when he showed his teammate Jaime Barreiro the yellow card. Faced with the player’s attempt to defend his colleague, Hernández decided to respond by slightly raising his knee, bringing it to the genital area of the Argentine midfielder.
The situation led to an uncontrolled riot among all the players and even those who were on the bench for each of the teams. This commotion, which lasted about 10 minutes, led to the distribution of six yellow cards and the expulsion of the two coaches.
The match ended in a 2-2 draw in what was a key match for the fight for a place in CONCACAF Champions Cup qualification, although the result was left on the back burner after the unusual attack that ha toured the world.
