The 22nd edition of Wimbledon will allow the participation of unvaccinated players, so Novak Djokovic, number one in the world, will be able to play in the third Grand Slam of the season.

The Serbian, who is barely able to play three tournaments this season due to his unvaccinated condition — he missed some important events, such as the Australian Open—, will be able to defend the title he won last year at the All England Club, when he wins in his twentieth Grand Slam and sixth Wimbledon against Italian Matteo Berrettini.

The contest, at its spring press conference, confirmed that the contest will be without measures against the covid and asserted his intention not to allow Russian and Belarusian tennis players to play in the tournament.

“We believe we have made the most responsible decision under the circumstances and there is no other viable alternative,” said Ian Hewitt, chairman of the All England Club.

Changes

The 2022 edition will be the first without the traditional ‘Middle Sunday’, the day that has served as a break for Merton neighborhood residents and players. With this measure, ‘crazy Monday’ ends, in which all rounds of 16 are played, which will now be split between Sunday and Monday.

Moreover, Wimbledon will join the rest of the Grand Slam by introducing a ten-point tie-break when it reaches 6-6 in the fifth set, instead of the normal tie-break played when it reaches 12- 12.
