Moldova held an emergency security meeting Tuesday, and the Kremlin expressed serious concern after two explosions damaged Soviet-era radio antennas in the separatist Transnistria region, which officials say had also targeted a military unit.
Moldovan officials are particularly sensitive to signs of escalating tensions in Transnistria, an unrecognized strip of land that Moscow has backed on Ukraine’s southwestern border since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Russia has permanently deployed troops in Transnistria since the collapse of the Soviet Union. Kyiv fears the area could be used as a launching pad for new attacks on Ukraine.
“Early on the morning of 26 April, two explosions occurred in the village of Maiac in the Grigoriopol district: the first at 06:40 and the second at 07:05,” the Transnistria Ministry of Interior reported.
No citizens were injured, but two radio antennas carrying Russian radio were knocked down, he added.
Separately, the Transnistrian Security Council reported a “terrorist attack” on a military unit near the city of Tiraspol, Russian news agency Tass reported.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that the news was cause for serious concern and Moscow was following developments closely.
