Chief umpire Chris Guccione told a reporter that Vanover had a “big bump” on his head. He was sent to a Cleveland clinic.

“They are about to do a shock test. She seemed coherent and pretty much knew what was going on.”Guccione said. “But it had a glassy look to it. He’ll probably spend the rest of the night in the hospital.”

“It was scary. Very hard to concentrate after watching a colleague take a shot. But they gave me new information and I thought ‘okay boy, he’s in good hands’. So, let’s move on,” he concluded.

Vanover, who had struck out Yankees manager Aaron Boone in the first inning after a controversial play, was knocked down by pitching off his feet. His cap flew off as he staggered across the field.”
