Agustín Canapino was sixth fastest in the final practice before the Indianapolis 500

Agostino Canapino he took advantage of the last contact with the oval at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway before the legendary 500 Miles finishing sixth in Carb Day, dominated by the Japanese ex Formula 1 driver Takuma Sato.

In ninth of his 74 final practice laps, the reef native posted his best time (39.7295) at an average speed of 226.532 mph and 0.2307 behind the two-time Indy 500 winner.

After Sato, Scott Dixon, Will Power, Alex Palou -the poleman- and Kyle Kirkwood were identified. His Juncos Hollinger Racing teammate Callum Ilott, however, was penultimate in his best 66 laps.

As a result of his performance, Canapino received praise, including that from veteran Josef Newgarden, the 2017 and 2019 IndyCar champion and current runner-up.

“Canapino has been a big surprise all season. If you can win? I don’t know, I think it will. He has all of Argentina with him”, expressed the 32-year-old American.

Canapino, on the other hand, kept his feet on the ground and declared after training: “I don’t think about going out to win or for the podium.”

A session with some fears

The final two hours of action before the race saw a few crashes and flags, including the black flag shown to Ryan Hunter-Reay for a gearbox fluid leak in his Dreyer and Reinbold car. “It better happened today than race day, but we missed an hour of training,” he lamented.

Katherine Legge, who had a frightening crash on Monday, drew a yellow when the lug nut on her left rear wheel came off her Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing just after mid-session.

In between punctures, Herta suffered a massive front right lockup going into the pits which blew his tire, while Devlin DeFrancesco blew the front right of his Andretti in turn 2 and struggled to stay away from the wall. . “I think it was just a slashed tire, we were using an old kit for pit testing. It definitely made my heart race!” he confessed.
