A FIFA delegation traveled to Brazil this Monday to analyze the imposition of sanctions on the five-time world champion country, following the reversal of the court decision that provisionally dismissed the president of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF). Representatives sent by FIFA considered “normality restored” after the Supreme Court reinstated Ednaldo Rodrigues as president of the CBF following a judicial intervention that questioned Brazil’s participation in the Venezuelan Pre-Olympic, the Confederation said in a statement.
It was Rodrigues himself who received this Monday in his office at the CBF headquarters director of legal affairs of FIFA, the Spaniard Emilio Garcíaand the legal manager of Conmebol, the Paraguayan Rodrigo Aguirre, sent to verify the situation in Brazil.
García said during the meeting that last Thursday’s decision by the Federal Supreme Court (STF) saved Brazil from running the risk of being excluded from international competitions, according to a CBF statement.
“FIFA came here to be able to guarantee the independence of the CBF and respect for the statutes of FIFA and Conmebol. We were relieved by the STF’s decision that brought Ednaldo back to the presidency of the CBF and we are happy to be back to the original situation “García was quoted as saying in the note.
The return to normality was guaranteed by the magistrate Gilmar Mendesone of the members of the Supreme Court and who accepted the recommendation of the Prosecutor’s Office and the General Council of Brazil to annul the judicial decision that deprived Rodrigues of his positionappointed an auditor and ordered new elections in the CBF.
Rodrigues remained away from the entity for almost a month after the Court of Justice of Rio de Janeiro, in a December 7 decision, found the vote in which he was elected in 2022 was illegal.
García said Brazil would be at great risk of facing sanctions if the decision sacking Rodrigues was confirmed because FIFA would view the situation as external intervention in the affairs of a private entity.
“There was a real risk that the FIFA Council would exclude Brazilian national teams, in all categories, as well as Brazilian clubs, from international competitions,” said the leader, also quoted in the CBF statement.
García added that the most important thing for FIFA and Conmebol is that Rodrigues was democratically elected by the representatives of Brazilian football.
The president of the CBF took advantage of the meeting to state that the most important thing now is to finish restoring normality.
“We have many urgent and urgent commitments in relation to the Brazilian football calendar in all competitions,” he said.
