The Italian Daniele De Rossi, historic former player of Roma and the Italian national football team, will be the new coach of “La Loba” until the end of this season, following the dismissal of José Mourinho.
“After 18 years as a Giallorossi footballer, De Rossi will return to the role of coach and will make his debut on our bench, in the championship match against Verona, on Saturday afternoon at the Olimpico.
Some time before, the club had issued a statement on the occasion of the Portuguese’s departure: “AS Roma announces that José Mourinho and his technical collaborators will leave the club with immediate effect”.
De Rossi is the second most capped player in Roma’s history and in 2021 he had a brief stint as an on-field assistant for the Italian national team.
The only coaching experience of the player, who also had a brief stint at Boca, occurred between October 2022 and February 2023, when he took over the technical direction of SPAL, an Italian Serie C team. He took charge of 17 matches for the club, of which he won only three, drew six and lost eight.
De Rossi’s brief and memorable period at Boca
The Italian arrived at Boca in mid-2019, in his short time with the club he managed to celebrate a goal – his dream.
De Rossi made his debut with the Xeneize shirt on 18 August 2019 in the 32nd round of the Argentine Cup against Almagro. His start was a dream, so much so that in the 28th minute of the first half he scored the 1-0, but after being substituted, the Tricolor equalized the match.
When “el Tano” was replaced there was a draw and Boca were eliminated on penalties.
Daniele played only 7 games with Xeneize: one for the Copa Libertadores, five for the local championship and the one mentioned for the Argentine Cup. Of all of them, only four have done so since the beginning.
Although Daniele’s stay at Boca was short, he also had the pleasure of playing a Superclásico on the River pitch. It was 1-1, in September 2019.
Despite having a year left on his contract, De Rossi decided to retire from football in January 2020 for family reasons. After his brief experience as a coach in the rise of Italy, he will now be able to afford the luxury of coaching one of the greats of football for at least six months.
