German automaker Wolkswagen on Monday confirmed its return to Formula 1 competition with its premium brands Audi and Porsche from the 2026 season.
The project has been known for a long time and in recent times it was confirmed in a statement by the company’s CEO, Herbert Diess, who specified that Porsche’s landing in F1 was “somewhat more concrete” than Audi’s, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.
The period for Volkswagen’s vehicles to return to great competition is in four years, when power units will be refurbished after the current freeze imposed by new rules on budget limits.
Porsche will return to big competition after more than 30 years since it last competed as an engine supplier with the disastrous Footwork project in 1991.
For Audi it will be its debut in F1 after several associations with McLaren, Williams, Sauber and even with Aston Martin.
