Juanfer Quintero, Roger Martínez, Johan Carbonero, the surprising goalscorer of the League Cup, Maravilla Martínez… Racing has a team to fly, but it hasn’t spread its wings yet. Despite this, Gustavo Costas does not back down from the words spoken on the day of his presentation (“we must stop competing, it’s time to win something international”) and doubles the bet ahead of his Cup debut tonight. Gustavo Adolfo Costas has an enthusiasm as great as the nerves he shows in every match on the sidelines. And, despite having suffered some setbacks that left him no margin for error in the Argentine competition, the coach who was the mascot of José’s team swears that his Racing does everything: “Of the four tournaments, we have to win at least two”, is played.

Achieving something with Racing and even more so with the South American team would be something beautiful. “We have to work and I know it will be very hard, but I have enormous confidence,” the coach said on ESPN, with his eyes set on the international tournament.

The last time the Academy won an international title, Costas was part of the team but as a player. This is the 1988 Super Cup, a real team that Coco Basile put together with Fillol in goal, Ruben Paz in the middle, Toti Iglesias, Catalán and Medina Bello in front and Costas in the back with Néstor Fabri.

“Racing needs to achieve something international again. Many years ago, when I played, it was the last time, a lot of things happened. Championships were won, they grew and today it is another club and I think we need to aim for this,” insists the coach.

Costas underlined the tight schedule the Academy faces: “We play on Thursday night, on Friday we arrive at the hotel at five in the morning, on Saturday we have and we play on Sunday… We have almost nothing.”

And, somehow, he retraced his steps. The fact is that, beyond the fact that “Racing needs to do something international”, as Costa repeats time and again, this Thursday he is saving some players for Sunday’s epochal match against Lanús.

The coach saves one of his aces, Racing’s different player: Juanfer Quintero will not be a starter in the cup debut this evening at 9pm. “Everyone wants to play, but we have to be physically fit. We have to see the rival”, let’s see what match it can be more physically intense. I want Juanfer to be 100% on Sunday,” he explained.

He said the following about his other ace, Maravilla Martínez: “He barely touches the ball, but he has spectacular quality. I don’t know if he’s the best in Argentine football, but he’s giving us the goal we’re missing.” , because sometimes we have many arrivals and if he isn’t there we miss him.

“In these four championships we must aim for at least two. Winning two championships and if we win the South American championship would be the dream of my life”, he concluded.
