Brad Marchand had a goal and two assists on Friday night to give the Boston Bruins a first-of-the-season lead in a game against the Carolina Hurricanes toward a 4-game win -2 in Game 3 of their National Hockey League (NHL) first round series.
Rookie goaltender Jeremy Swayman blocked 25 shots in his first career playoff start. Linus Ullmark allowed eight goals in the first two games, which the Hurricanes won.
Those two wins followed the Hurricanes ’impressive regular-season dominance over the Bruins.
The Hurricanes eliminated the three-game series and led 16-1 on goals recorded without falling.
Charlie Coyle shorthanded and added an assist, David Pastrnak hit the target in a power play and also had an assist for the Bruins, who will have a chance to tie the series in the fourth game on Sunday in front of their supporters.
Taylor Hall, in power play in the third period, scored another goal for the Bruins.
The Hurricanes response came from Vincent Trocheck and Jaccob Slavin.
Backup goaltender Pyotr Kochetkov made 24 saves in his first career start in playoff games. In the second match, Kotchetkov replaced Antti Raanta who was injured following a collision with Pastrnak.
Trocheck gave the Hurricanes the lead when he capitalized on a return pitch, but Coyle tied the game with 2:44 left in the first period.
Early in the second period, Marchand touched the top of the net to give the Bruins their first lead against the Hurricanes after 325 minutes and 41 seconds of play.
Meanwhile, the game was delayed by about seven minutes into the second period when a glass backboard fell on an NHL official working on the Bruins penalty box.
The officer, who was not immediately identified, left the enclosure on a stretcher and was applauded by Bruins fans.
