Pierre-Luc Dubois scored twice as Canada opened its World Hockey Championship title defense with a 5-3 win over Germany on Friday.
Noah Gregor, Kent Johnson and Cole Sillinger also hit the mark for Canada. Logan Thompson made 18 saves.
Mortiz Seider, who was nominated for the Calder Trophy as the NHL’s Most Outstanding Rookie, had a goal and two assists for Germany. Marc Michaelis and Matthias Plachta also got the ropes, while Tim Stützle got two assists.
Canada led 5-1 after two periods, but opened the door for Germany with a bit of lack of discipline.
Nicolas Roy was punished for tripping after 32 seconds in the final third, then Adam Lowry joined him in the penalty box 25 seconds later. Plachta took the opportunity to score five against three.
The Germans cut the deficit to 5-3 in another two-man power play. Seider hit the mark in 12:35, while Josh Anderson and Morgan Geekie were in jail.
Germany replaced goalkeeper Philipp Grubauer with an extra striker late in the game, but Thompson closed the door.
Grubauer made 22 saves in the Germany net.
Canada will play its next game on Sunday against Italy.
In other games on Friday, Finland beat Norway 5-0, the United States beat Latvia 4-1 and Slovakia beat France 4-2.
