While some rest and recharge batteries while waiting for the start of Roland Garros, others need to stay on the court and add playing time to face the second Grand Slam of the season. Argentine tennis players who are contending for the ATP 250 in Lyon and Geneva are in that plan. In France there was a victory for Sebastián Báez, who removed his compatriot from the race Thomas Etcheverryand in Switzerland the smile was Federico Delbonis.
Báez stressed his status as the seventh seed in the tournament in Lyon and won the duel between the Argentines 6-2, 6-1 to reach the second round.
This season’s champion of the Estoril tournament and finalist in Santiago overcome by authority to his countrymen that he defeated on the only occasion where they previously faced off, in 2019, in brick dust also but in the orbit of the Challengers circuit.
The 21-year-old from Buenos Aires and 38 in the ATP rankings took an hour and a half to resolve the promise against Etcheverry to meet in the second leg of the tournament with German Oscar Otte who beat Frenchman Lucas Pouille 6-3 and 6-1.
Delbonis is trying to regain good feelings in Geneva.
Meanwhile, Delbonis defeated Lithuanian Ricardas Berankis by a double 6-4 and advanced to the second round in Geneva. It was a smile for Delbo, who woke up on Monday with a big drop in the rankings, where he lost by 23 spots.
Azuleño, number 62 in the world ranking, will have as his next rival the Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis or the Italian Fabio Fognini.
The other Argentine tennis player present at this tournament was Rosario Facundo Bagnis (98th), who entered the main draw from the classification. He will face in the first round Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili, fifth seed, who won the only precedent on the circuit (Wimbledon 2015).
