The 24-year-old Italian opened his record at this transition stage, the longest in the event with its 204 kilometers, to register his country’s second victory in two days after Alberto Dainese’s victory on Wednesday.

Spanish Juan Pedro Lopez (Trek) hid his pink jersey after this day in the heat, between Emilia and Liguria (northwest).

Dutchman Wilco Kelderman, a member of a river breakaway, recovered more than eight minutes into the classification where he occupied 23rd place at the start of Parma, more than 11 minutes from the pink jersey.

To win on stage, Oldani defeated his compatriot Lorenzo Rota and Dutchman Gijs Leemreize in the sprint. These are the three runners with no wins on their record.

The stage resulted in a celebration of attacks in its early part to launch a breakaway that formed after about sixty kilometers. From this group of 25 riders came Rota, the first to attack, then Oldani and Leemreize as they approached the final 50 kilometers.

A quartet of pursuers (Mollema, Kelderman, L. Hamilton, Buitrago) failed to close the gap that lasted approximately thirty seconds.

The Giro took the Passo del Bocco route for the first time since Wouter Weylandt’s fatal fall in 2011, on the descent. The Belgian rider’s bib number 108 has been removed from the list of competitors.

In the final, the race passed through Ponto San Giorgio, which replaced the Polcevera motorway viaduct that partially collapsed in August 2018. The accident resulted in the deaths of 43 people.

Friday, the 13th stage connects Sanremo, on the shores of the Ligurian Sea, with Cuneo, at the foot of the Piedmontese Alps. The 150 -kilometer course went through a pass in the first half before a rolling final until the end was judged on a slightly uphill false flat.
