Lemieux’s corner finally threw in the towel, inviting the referee to intervene to keep Montrealer healthy after 1 min 31 s in the third round.

After a more than acceptable start to the match, Lemieux was soon faced with a stronger opponent who knocked him out via devastating uppercuts before the end of the first round.

Saved by the bell, Lemieux could do nothing against the power of his young rival. In less time than it took to describe the combinations that hit him relentlessly, Lemieux found himself on his back at the lowest of the cables.

He still finished the second recovery on his two feet, but Benavidez had time to inflict a lot of injury. Lemieux returned to his corner with a bloody face and no doubt in high spirits.

Bravely, Lemieux threw his best weapon into the fight early in the third round, but Benavidez didn’t budge. When the final round of punches came, Marc Ramsay waved the white flag. This was done for Lemieux (43-5, 36 KOs), while Benavidez (26-0, 23 KOs) can be said to be mission accomplished.

The young man from Phoenix, former double WBC super middleweight champion, can now aspire even higher.

Canelo, Canelo, Canelo shouts of the spectators after its final victory for Benavidez.

Soon after, the Lemieux clan informed reporters that he would not be speaking to the media tonight (Saturday).
