Argentina And Italy will be played today Wednesday from 15.45 on Final at Wembley Stadium. It will be a unique duel between the champions of America and Europe approved by FIFA. What was the Artemio Franchi Cup, played twice and the last winner of which was the Argentine national team of Alfio Basile in 1993.
It is known that between our country and the Italian peninsula there are cultural and football ties that unite the two nations and make them almost sisters. But there is also a rich football history that is worth reviewing.
Argentina and Italy met for the first time in 1954. They played 15 games with a record showing 4 Argentine wins, 6 Italian wins and 5 draws. The last World Cup match between the two teams was perhaps the most remembered, for the emotion of the Argentine fans and the anguish of fans.

It was July 3, 1990 at the San Paolo stadium in Naples-today Diego Armando Maradona-, for the semifinals of the World Cup in Italy 90. On that occasion, everything settled down from the twelve steps after the 1-1 draw in the 90 minutes of regulation. After those penalties, Sergio Goycochea became a national hero and Carlos Salvador Bilardo’s team achieved the second consecutive World Cup final.
But a special man took credit for that victory and his memory moved Argentines on social media. “I excluded the Italians in the World 90“says Diego Armando Maradona with a mischievous smile that shows Creole clarity and vivacity. The video was shared on Twitter and quickly filled with interactions.
In the cutout, he says it was so “the most suffered punishment” of his life because “it came from the mistake against Yugoslavia” -that match for the quarter-finals was resolved by the same decisive instance-. Maradona confesses that before hearing the referee’s whistle he had a funny cross with Walter Zenga, but demoralizing the Ten was not an easy task.
“When I quickly played it close to Zenga’s foot I said: ‘Hi’“. Argentina’s fourth penalty was a goal. It comes from Diego’s left foot. Maradona’s anecdote is completed by Goycoechea’s save on Aldo Serena and, as anticipated by the Fluff, there was no need to kick again. Victory for 3-4 and to celebrate the passage to the final.
But in the next game something happened that remained forever etched in the retina of the Argentine fan. On 8 July 1990 Argentina and Germany met at the Olympic Stadium in Rome for the final of the 90th World Cup in Italy. During the Argentine national anthem, a cataract of whistles arose from all four sides of the stadium.
Maradona’s reaction was imminent and when the camera passed in front of his face, everything was recorded. The Villa Fiorito native has launched a flood of insults against European fans to defend himself from the offense against him, his country and his national symbol. I couldn’t believe it.
