After seeing Zachary play several minutes last season, which was new for him, the club aimed to find a solution so they could keep him with us longer, sporting director Olivier Renard has revealed. So we’re happy that he accepted the additional years of this option so he can continue his development in Montreal.

The 23-year-old right-back has played 94 minutes in four games this season. He notably scored a goal on March 12 against New York City FC. Brault-Guillard also recorded 123 minutes in the team’s four CONCACAF Champions League games.

In 2021, he played 30 games, including 23 as a starter, and he spent 2,056 minutes on the pitch. He had two goals and three assists. According to Brault-Guillard, this reduction in his playing time is specifically explained by the level of performance which head coach Wilfried Nancy believes he is capable of.

On the tactical aspects, in reading the game, he often repeats it to me, Brault-Guillard said at a virtual press briefing on Tuesday. It’s up to management, recognizing good moves, making fewer mistakes. He was demanding of me, he wanted me to thrive. He feels I have great potential and I may not be taking advantage of it too much sometimes. I’ll be the one to find the key.

He wanted to take me to the next level. It’s up to me to do good, to work harder for myself, to raise my level.

A quote from Zachary Brault-Guillard

On the international scene, Montrealer has played six games with the Canadian national team since its debut on October 16, 2018 against Dominica in a CONCACAF Nations League qualifier.

He scored his first goal with the national team on June 6, 2021, a 7-0 win over Aruba in a World Cup qualifier. In addition to this meeting, Brault-Guillard participated in another qualifying campaign game, the 2-0 victory over El Salvador on Feb. 2.

Although Richie Laryea and Alistair Johnston, in particular, have identified themselves with his position, Brault-Guillard keeps the Mondial in his sights.

Everyone dreams of joining the group in Qatar. We have been waiting for this for a long time, he recalled. This is a big group. The men have been unreliable for several years since John Herdman took over. He proved to everyone that, little by little, we are worthy of where we are. We are proud of what we have accomplished, but it is only a step towards the goal we have had for many years.

Brault-Guillard also participated in the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2019 and played four games with the under-23 team in March 2021. He joined the Canadian program in 2016 at the age of 17.
