Four years after the Broncos ’tragic bus crash in Humboldt, Saskatchewan, the pain in the community is still fresh.
On April 6, 2018, 16 people were killed and 13 others were injured when a truck collided with the hockey team’s bus.
Broncos general manager and head coach Scott Barney said he thinks about members of the organization who die in accidents every day.
” Whenever the team goes to the arena and wears a jersey, we think of them. “
A celebration to mark the fourth anniversary
The public is invited to Elgar-Peterson Arena at 4:30 pm to attend a ceremony honoring those who fell and were injured.
” I ask everyone to observe a minute of silence at 4:30 pm, the estimated time of the accident. At the same time, the bells of St. Augustine’s Church in Humboldt will ring 29 times. “
Videos of the team and the first anniversary of the accident will be displayed on the amphitheater’s giant screen.
The photos will be posted on the Municipality’s Facebook page before being offered on its website.
Approximately 4,000 Humboldt Broncos blankets were collected and distributed to the families of the crash victims, first responders and those who intervened at the time of the tragedy.
Future sports complex: still in question
The Broncos memorial complex, a draft of which was announced on the same date last year, is still in the negotiation stage.
The building will feature an ice rink, memorial gallery, and physiotherapy area.
According to its communications manager Penny Lee, the city is currently studying the feasibility of the project.
Negotiations with local businesses are being conducted with the aim of obtaining financing for its construction.
