Diego Schwartzman began his grass tour which will end in Wimbledon in defeat. The porteño, 16th in the world, said goodbye to the debut of the ATP 500 of the queen falling 6-1 and 6-4 against the American Sam Querrey, 121 ° in the standings and coming from the standings. Later, Francisco Cerúndolo, 46th, will face the Spaniard Pietro Martinez49th, even in the first round.

The smallwho in his only previous participation in the competition, in 2019, had reached the quarter-finals, could not do much against Querrey, former number 11 in the ranking and champion in the London tournament in 2010.

The American was very solid with his serve (he won 24 of the 31 points played with the former), he scored 27 winning shots and did not give the rival the break point.

Schwartzman, a finalist this year in Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro, had moments of good tennis, but did not achieve regularity in the game and gave up the service three times, two in the first set and once in the second.

Querrey, who was semifinalist at Wimbledon in 2017, entered the main draw of the tournament from qualifying, with wins against the Pole Kamil Majchrzak (85th) and Italian Tommaso Fabiano (177 °). Now he will clash with the winner of the duel between his compatriot Jenson Brooksby and Serbian Filip Krajinovic.

The smallwho returned to the circuit this week after taking a few days off after crashing in the quarter-finals of Roland Garros against Novak Djokovic, will play the Eastbourne ATP 250 next week, the last preparation event before the British Grand Slam.

In the AELTC and on the surface where he feels less comfortable, he has signed his best performances in the last two editions. He reached the third round in 2019, when he lost to Matteo Berrettini, and last year, when he fell in Martin Fucsovic. The 2020 one was canceled due to the pandemic.

Cerúndolo, the other Argentine present at the event, will later make his debut against Spaniard Martínez – who will also play doubles with Schwartzman – in what will be the first duel between the two.

It will be Francisco’s first appearance on the main draw of a grass tournament. On these types of pitches, the 23-year-old from Buenos Aires only played in qualifying for Wimbledon 2021, in which he lost in the third round.
