Eugenie Bouchard chose to ignore the Wimbledon tournament. Invited to participate by organizers last week, the 28-year-old Quebecer announced his decision on his Twitter account on Friday.
I decided to leave Wimbledon because of the WTA’s decision not to award championship points this year, he wrote. Because of my shoulder surgery, I am entitled to a limited number of protected rank entries. As much as I love Wimbledon, and it saddens me to miss this tournament, it makes no sense to use an entry without a protected ranking, especially for a tournament that doesn’t award points. I have to carefully choose my tournaments to get back to the level where I want to be.
Bouchard, who hasn’t played since March 2021, is technically beyond 1000th in the world, but his protected ranking puts him around 120th in the world, where he was before his injury.
I continue to train and aim to return to the game later in the summer, Bouchard added. I will use my two grand slam exemptions for the US Open and Australian Open.
Bouchard had his best moments in 2014 on the London turf when he reached the final before being beaten dry by Czech Petra Kvitova.
