The World Athletics Championshipswhich is taking place in Eugene, in the state of Oregon, this Wednesday gave a very emotional moment. jake wightman, 28 year old English athlete, managed to win gold in the 1500 meters. The father and coach of the athlete, Geoff Wightmanhe followed him from the stands of the Hayward Field stadium, and logically he couldn’t contain his emotion, but the most surprising thing is that he is usually the commentator of the big leagues and this time he was no exception.

This is my son! I train him. And he is the world champion! “, were the words of the athlete’s father in charge of telling the match to the spectators of the stadium, who could no longer hold back their tears. Without a doubt, it was an unforgettable moment that both of them will cherish forever.

Wightman became champion after a great comeback and left Jakob Ingebrigtsen – who had taken the lead in the 800m – and Mohamed Katir on the verge of gold. The Brit reached Ingebrigtsen with 300 meters from the end and accelerated to 200 meters to never get caught. Besides, it was the first athlete in Europe to win gold in the 1500 meters, after almost 39 years, when the English Steve Cram won the first edition of Helsinki 1983.

The result was surprising, as although Wightman is an athlete who has achieved good results, he did not reach the World Cup as one of the favorites for the gold win. To his credit he has a third place in the 1500 meters of the European Championships which took place in Berlin in 2018 and a third place at the Commonwealth Games in 2018, also in the 1500 meters.
