Vélez will meet Flamengo again in the Copa Libertadores. They had already met last year, in the group stage, and now they will do so in the semifinals, which will start at the end of the month. And, despite the intersections that existed in between, the memory automatically leads to 1995 and the fist of Chino Zandoná to Edmundo in the Maracana.

Was October 3 for the return of the round of 16 of the Super Cup. Fortín arrived in Brazil after losing 3-2 to Amalfitani and now suffered 3-0 at Parque do Sabiá, where Flamengo had the attack they had dreamed of: Romario, Sávio and Edmundo, who scored a goal that night each.

When the result was already fixed, the Chinese Flavio Zandoná had to raise, in addition to the victory, the accusations of O Animal, as Edmundo was called.

Although, in reality, he couldn’t stand it: the Brazilian started showing him the ball and the player from Vélez slapped him in the face. The Brazilian touched his face, spat on the ground and slapped him. Accustomed to charging, he turned around as if it was all over there but Zandoná distances himself and hits him with a left left that leaves him on the ground.

There was only one fight that ended in a flying kick by Chapulín Romariowhich then ended up being immortalized in the graffiti on the flags of the Torcida del Flamengo.

Years later, when he was about to retire, Zandoná, who in 1994 joined the defense of American champion Vélez de Carlos Bianchi, made a (halfway) self-criticism: “With Edmundo I have a pros and a cons. The good thing is that I hit him in Brazil, and the cons is that I hit him from behind. I wanted to hit him head on“.

As soon as Vélez, now led by Cacique Medina, settled in the semi-finals of the current Libertadores, after beating Talleres 1-0 in Córdoba and winning 4-2 in total, Twitter users remembered Zandoná. And, of course, also from his historic punch to the Maracana.
