British billionaire Frederick Barclay has been criticized by a London judge for failing to pay his ex-wife Hiroko Barclay £100m in attorney fees during the divorce proceedings.
“The fact that Lady Barclay has almost nothing in terms of financial resources for the future must be a disgrace to Sir Frederick and her nieces,” said Judge Jonathan Cohen, according to the US news agency Bloomberg.
The magistrate today postponed the humiliation sentence of 87-year-old Barclay by three months. Cohen said the debt wouldn’t go away, and urged “to deal personally” with his nephews to find a solution before making a decision.
Barclay’s defense had already claimed that the billionaire would not be able to make the payments, which would begin with the payment of £50 million (R$309.55 million) at the decision of his daughter and nephews who took over control of the family. The judge also described it as “extraordinary” that the Barclay family did not help his ex-wife despite making financial efforts to keep the billionaire from being arrested. Cohen described Hiroko as “the biggest victim”.
