Ukraine: The United States in favor of a demilitarized zone around Zaporijjia

The United States says it supports a demilitarized zone around Zaporizhia, the State Department said as the largest nuclear power plant in Europe and Ukraine was bombed again.

The United States on Thursday called on Russia to cease all military operations in and around nuclear power plants in Ukraine and said it supports kyiv’s call for a “demilitarized zone” in newly bombed Zaporizhia.

“Fighting near a nuclear power plant is dangerous and irresponsible,” a State Department spokesman said, adding that “the United States continues to call on Russia to cease all military operations in and around nuclear power plants and to return full control to Russia.” Ukraine, and support Ukrainian calls for a demilitarized zone in and around the nuclear power plant.”

United Nations concerned

The site of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, the largest in Europe, was bombed again on Thursday, with Ukraine and Russia accusing each other of it.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also warned of a risk of “catastrophe” shortly before an emergency Security Council meeting on the issue, at Russia’s request.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for the establishment of a demilitarized zone in Zaporizhia, which Russian troops seized on March 4, shortly after the February 24 invasion of Ukraine began.
