It is the captain of Borussia Dortmund Marco Reus, one of the players of the German national team with the best performance of the last 18 months, excited to be able to regain the dominance of a few years ago. But this Saturday fate might play a joke on him againbecause a right ankle injury could leave him without the Qatar 2022 World Cup, which would add to a bad streak on his presence in the “big” tournaments.
Reus, 33, was carried away on a stretcher during the first half of the Ruhr derby between Dortmund and Schalke, after entering the field incorrectly and turning his ankle almost completely.
Reus cried in pain after spraining his ankle while playing for a ball with Schalke’s Florian Flick. For the German entered the American Gio Reyna, while Flick was able to continue after receiving knee treatment.
German coach Hansi Flick had called up Reus for the upcoming national teams against Hungary and England and counted on the attacking midfielder as a crucial member of the World Cup squad.
Qatar 2022 starts on November 20. Germany, in Group E, will face Japan in Doha on 23, Spain in Al Khor on 27 and Costa Rica on 1 December.
Reus suffered injuries at inconvenient times throughout his career. Over the past decade, he has barely been able to play in Russia 2018, where Germany were eliminated early. Subsequently, he skipped Euro 2012, 2016, 2021 and the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
Dortmund have not yet communicated the severity of the injury, although the player had to receive treatment in the locker room before being taken to the hospital.
Reus has scored 15 goals in 48 games for Germany.
Rescue from goalkeeper to goalkeeper
Saturday’s day in the Bundesliga also left Dortmund as a momentary leader after winning the classic 1-0. But one of the surprising results was Bayern Munich’s 1-0 defeat in their trip to Augsburg.
The peculiarity of that match is that the historic goalkeeper Manuel Neuer went to look for the rival area in the last center of the afternoon, hit him with his head and his colleague from Augsburg parried him in a spectacular way.
The rest of the results? Bayer Leverkusen 1 – Werder Bremen 1; Stuttgart 1-Frankfurt 3; later they played Monchengladbach against Leipzig.
